As far as police body armor is concerned, its main function can only be to prevent the physical injury of low-speed and medium-speed gunshot-pistol bullets to the police at a certain distance. But wearing body armor is not like entering a safe, no matter how the gun hits, it can be unscathed, because body armor has a certain amount of bulletproof performance under certain limited conditions.
Body armor is divided into soft, hard, and hard-soft combination according to the material, and under normal circumstances, its ballistic performance gradually increases, but the weight also gradually increases. In the performance of their tasks, police officers of various countries are often reluctant to wear bulky composite body armor with good protection performance for the convenience and flexibility of their actions, but are more willing to wear light soft body armor.
However, due to technical reasons, the soft body armor equipped by various countries is not yet 100% bulletproof. At present, the body armor is basically tested in accordance with the American NIJ0101.04 standard in the bulletproof test, that is, when the probability of body armor being penetrated is 50%, the shooting distance of the standard is generally 5~15 meters. Relevant information shows that, with reference to this standard, China's police body armor lined with steel plates can generally protect against pistol bullets of various calibers with a distance of 5 meters and a speed of 300~450 m/s, while soft body armor cannot provide effective protection against steel core bullets. But this does not mean that the standard of body armor in my country is low, because even the Belgian FNP series body armor, which is famous for its elastic resistance, can only protect against pistol bullets of various calibers 3 meters away.
According to media reports, a certain type of body armor that claims to be able to withstand pistol firing 7.5 centimeters away and is equipped with more than 200,000 police officers in the United States was pierced by bullets twice in 10 days in 2003, resulting in the death of two policemen and the wounding of one. Of course, the conclusion of the investigation is all objective reasons: when the body armor was penetrated, it was not worn and used within the valid data of the body armor protection standards.
