Components of a Plate Carrier
A plate carrier is a specialized vest designed to hold ballistic plates. These plates are often made from materials like ceramic, steel, or composite materials. They are designed to stop bullets and other ballistic threats in their tracks. There are several other components that make up a plate carrier:
The front panel of a plate carrier is the central part of the vest that houses the primary ballistic plate. It is strategically positioned to protect vital organs, such as the heart and lungs.
The back panel typically holds another ballistic plate to provide complete front and back protection.
These straps are worn over the shoulders and play a crucial role in evenly distributing the weight of the plate carrier. Proper adjustment ensures comfort and stability during use.
The MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) system consists of webbing and loops on the plate carrier. It allows you to attach various pouches and accessories for customization and convenience.
There are four categories of plate carrier styles, and which one you choose should depend on your circumstances, planning, and your most probable threat types. The four categories are:
Heavy Armor Plate Carriers
This type of plate carrier is most common for military style applications that will require 30-40+ lbs of gear and equipment in addition to the carrier. The straps, cumberbund, and configuration are designed with long, multi-day use in mind. The attachment & modularity of Heavy Armor Systems are typically pretty high as intended use will require adequate supply of magazines, radio comms, IFAK medical, lights, hydration, etc.
Moderate Armor Plate Carriers
This type of plate carrier is a lot more popular for law enforcement & the prepared civilian market as it is configured for rugged use while keeping a little smaller profile than the Heavy Armor System would offer. Moderate Armor Systems will still be able to attach & stow additional gear attachments in the 20-30 lbs range.
Minimalist Plate Carriers
This type of plate carrier is for stowing the bare minimum of gear attachments (magazines, IFAK medical, & light accessory loadouts) to be ready at a moment's notice. Ideal for civilians looking to have an armor system on the go in their car or truck, for home defense, or something that is rapidly accessible for civil unrest scenarios.
Often times minimalist plate carriers will be run "slick". When you have a slick plate carrier this means that you are not carrying attachments on the carrier. This allows the plate carrier to have a much slimmer profile and be much more concealable when needed. A slick plate carrier also allows you to have less weight and increase mobility and comfort.
Concealable Plate Carriers
Commonly referred to as Bulletproof Vests, this type of armor system is for concealability, maneuverability, and protection from smaller caliber weapons, such as most handgun calibers. Concealable Carriers will deploy soft armor plates that help add to the mobility and comfort while wearing. The trade-off is the Concealable Plate Carrier doesn't carry any gear or attachments (or does os minimally) and will fall short on stopping capability for higher caliber weapons.
Chest Rig (Not an Armor System)
Chest Rigs are another piece of equipment that can get confused with Plate Carriers. A chest rig allows the operator to carry gear and accessories in its pouches. The chest rig usually has a placard or preset pouches, or some are modular and allow the user to piece together their kit. In short, chest rigs provide the external pouches and items that a plate carrier allows without carrying body armor. This makes a chest rig much smaller and lighter than a plate carrier system.
How Choosing the Right Plate Carrier Setup
Aside from the type of plate carrier you need, there are a ton of other factors to think about when choosing a plate carrier.
Fitment
Size and correct fitment is the first and most important consideration. A properly sized plate carrier will allow you to run, jump, climb, bend, grapple, and shoot without compromising your range of motion. Plate carriers should also be chosen based on the size of ballistic plate you wear. Just as a large plate won't fit in a small plate carrier, a small plate won't fit correctly in a large plate carrier and won't provide proper protection. Just as importantly, the correct size will also hold the body armor plates in the correct position for maximum ballistic protection. Plates should sit nice and high.
Many prefer the top of their front plate sitting just below the sternal notch, the "U"-shaped divot at the top of the sternum. This positions the plate to protect vital organs like the heart, lungs, and liver, as well as major vessels like the aorta and superior and inferior vena cava. Though often overlooked, the rear plate should sit nice and high, too.
Load Bearing Capability
Plate carrier setup is largely dependent on your mission, and the next consideration is the amount of load-carrying capacity you need. If you are working with a plate carrier on a regular basis, odds are you want to attach some mag pouches, medical supplies, and other accessories. Your plate carrier setup should support your mission needs with enough MOLLE attachment, and the underlying structure to support it.
Armor Plates and Inserts
Of course, it is worth mentioning the armor in your plate carrier. The armor you choose should be decided by likely threats you face. Body armor comes in two broad categories: soft and hard. Soft body armor typically goes up to NIJ Level IIIA, meaning it will stop 9mm, .357 Magnum, and .44 Magnum when fired from a handgun. This is what the typical law enforcement officer wears. Unfortunately, soft armor provides no protection from rifle rounds.
Hard armor provides the ballistic protection necessary against rifle fire. Hard plates come in two recognized protection levels: Level III and Level IV. Level III armor provides ballistic protection against rifles up to 7.62x51mm NATO (.308 Win) using standard, FMJ ammunition. Level IV armor provides extra ballistic protection. Level IV plates are certified to stop an armor-piercing round from a 7.62 rifle.
How Should a Plate Carrier Fit and How To Wear a Plate Carrier
Getting a properly fitted plate carrier is not only important for your own comfort, but for safety as well. Nothing else matters if your carrier is in the wrong size. Take a look at the sizing chart in each product description to ensure that you are getting the proper size.
A plate carrier should fit snugly around the torso, without being too tight or too loose. It should be adjusted to sit comfortably on the shoulders, with the front and back plates centered on the chest and back respectively. The cummerbund should be adjusted to fit securely around the waist, with the Velcro straps fastened tightly but not so much that it restricts breathing or movement.
When wearing a plate carrier, the front plate should be centered on the chest, while the back plate should be centered on the upper back. The cummerbund should be fastened with the adjustable side facing forward, and the Velcro straps should be securely fastened. It is important to ensure that the plate carrier is not too loose or too tight, as this can affect mobility and comfort during use.
Ultimately, you want a tactical vest that doesn't compromise your movements. It should be comfortable enough to let your arms move without restraint for shooting, accessing gear, running, or whatever movements your training demands. The last thing you want is for your plate carrier setup to slow you down, cause resistance, or interrupt muscle memory. All of our plates and plate carriers are designed with these things in mind.
Where should a plate carrier sit on your body?
A great fitting carrier secures the body armor plates without adding resistance to your range of motion. A snug cummerbund also helps to reduce the pressure on your shoulders. Armor vests should extend roughly from right below the collarbone to the base of your rib cage.
The priority of ballistic protection should be to cover your vitals. Your vest protection should start two fingers' width below your collarbone. A common mistake is to wear a body armor system too low in an attempt to cover the stomach, compromising the armored protection of your vitals in the upper chest. Covering the cardiac box, where your most vital organs like the heart and lungs are located, is crucial.
Getting shot in the stomach simply has a greater survival rate than getting shot in the upper chest. You should always emphasize your armor around the areas that are most vulnerable.
Mission Critical Items for your plate carrier loadout
Think of your plate carrier as a toolbox. Take advantage of this by making sure you are using it effectively. You should be thinking of all the different items that are needed for your mission. When setting up a plate carrier, it's essential to have a well-thought-out loadout of mission-critical items. Items in your "load out" may include plate carrier accessories like magazine pouches, medical supplies, communication gear, and other plate carrier essentials that will aid in the completion of the mission. Proper configuration of a plate carrier can make all the difference in terms of performance and readiness in high-pressure situations. The next couple of sections will discuss different ways to think about your kit setup.
Pistol Setup For Your Plate Carrier
When setting up your plate carrier for pistol use, there are a few options for holster placement.
One popular option is a drop-leg holster, which can be attached to the cummerbund or molle attachments. Another option is a holster that attaches directly to the plate carrier, such as on the shoulder strap or a chest rig add-on. This can allow for quicker and more efficient access to your firearm in those situations. This setup is often used by pilots and other professionals who are required to sit down for their job.
Common considerations when choosing a holster include retention capabilities, ease of access, and compatibility with your specific pistol model. It's important to practice drawing and firing your pistol from your plate carrier setup to ensure efficiency and accuracy in a real-life situation.
Radio Setup For Comms
Communication is crucial in any tactical situation, and having a reliable radio setup on your plate carrier is essential. When it comes to placement, there are a few options to consider. Some people prefer to mount the antenna on the shoulder strap of their plate carrier, while others prefer to have it attached to the back or side.
Common considerations include the type of tactical radio being used (such as a Baofeng military radio), the type of antenna needed, and the push-to-talk (PTT) button location.
Make sure to choose a radio and antenna setup that offers clear and reliable comms, and that the PTT button is easily accessible while wearing your plate carrier.
Admin Pouch For Plate Carriers
An admin pouch is a versatile addition to your plate carrier setup, providing storage for small essentials such as pens, notepads, and ID cards.
When considering placement, many people opt for a molle pouch attachment to use as a front pouch for their plate carrier or chest rig. Each of these can be added to the plate carrier in order to provide additional storage and organization.
Another popular option is a tactical kangaroo pouch, which sits on the front of the plate carrier and offers quick access to essential items. Common considerations include the size and capacity of the pouch, as well as the type of closure mechanism (such as a zipper or buckle).
Keeping Magazines Handy With Mag Pouches
Mag pouches are essential for keeping ammunition handy on a plate carrier. There are several options for placement, including on the front, sides, or back of the carrier.
When choosing mag pouches, common considerations include the type of holder, the material, and the size.
It's also important to choose mag pouches that fit the specific type of ammo you're carrying, whether it's pistol mags or AR mags.
Many of our customers pair our plate carriers with Kydex mag pouches, because of their durability and retention capabilities.
The number of mag pouches needed will vary depending on the mission and personal preference. Most people carry 1-5, but overseas soldiers are required to carry 7 in total.
Tactical Knife Plate Carrier Placement
When it comes to plate carrier knife setups, there are several options for placement. Some plate carriers feature a built-in knife sheath on the shoulder strap or the cummerbund, allowing for quick and easy access to the blade. Alternatively, a knife can be attached to the plate carrier using a molle knife attachment, which can be secured to the front or back of the carrier.
Common considerations for choosing a knife for your plate carrier setup include the type of blade, such as a Kabar or other tactical knife, and the length of the blade.
